1) The History and Topography of Dauphin, Cumberland, Franklin, Bedford, Adams, Perry, Somerset, Cambria, and Indiana Counties I. Daniel Rupp, 1848, 711 pages This publication begins with an early history of the state. After the general history of the area, it changes focus to Adams County, covered on pages 511 - 538. These pages discuss the formation of the county (being split from neighboring York County), a description of its geography, agriculture and industry, and a brief history of its major towns. Following this is some discussion of the border dispute between Maryland and Pennsylvania and accounts of the early settlers of the area. At the end is a very useful Every-Name Index that was added to the original publication.
2) A Historical Sketch of Christ's Church in Union Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania John Ault, 1876, 18 pages The account begins with a brief history of the settlement of the area, followed by the formation and growth of the church.
3) Historical Discourse, the Presbyterian Church of Gettysburg, Penn'a. J. K. Demarest, 1876, 43 pages This is a history of the Presbyterian Church of Gettysburg, Adams County, PA. It covers the formation and growth of the church and the men who served the congregation.
4) History and Directory of the Boroughs of Gettysburg, Oxford, Littlestown, York Springs, Berwick, and East Berlin, Adams County, PA with Historical Collections. John T. Reily, 1880, 188 pages. From the Prefatory: This publication "...has been limited to the boroughs of the county, combining a history and a directory of the same as more interesting, and giving such other history and directory matter as could be obtained under the head of "Historical Collection." The publication begins with a brief history of the settlement and development of the area, and details about the formation of the county from York county. It then proceeds to cover the major towns. Gettysburg - The sketch includes a brief history of the town, relates the histories of several churches within it: St. Marks & St. James Reformed Churches, Rock Creek Presbyterian Church, The Methodist Church, Upper & Lower Marsh Creek Presbyterian Churches, Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, The Protestant Episcopal Church, Conewago Chapel and St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church. It then relates a description of the Battle of Gettysburg, the Soldiers Monument, and a history of the Theological Seminary and Pennsylvania College. Following this is the Directory, listing County and Borough Officials, Churches, Lodges and Corporations and their leaders. It includes a Business Directory listed alphabetically by trade, followed by a Post Office Directory listing the resident's name, occupation and street. New Oxford - The sketch begins with a history of the town's founding, followed by histories of the following churches: The Union Reformed Church, the Lutheran Church, Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, and the Methodist Episcopal Church. Following this are some additional historical aspects of the area and then the same type of directory information noted above for Gettysburg. Littlestown - Like above, the sketch begins with a history of the town's founding followed by discussion of its churches: The Catholic Church, United Brethren Church in Christ, the Methodist Episcopal Church, the Redeemer's Reformed Church, and St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church. 5) History of Cumberland and Adams Counties, Pennsylvania Warner, Beers & Co., 1886, 1155 pages This is an extensive compilation of historical and biographical information covering Cumberland and Adams Counties, PA. Part 1 contains a discussion of the early history of Pennsylvania, outlining the involvement of various individuals in its settlement and growth. Part 2 contains a history of Cumberland County, its beginning and growth, a history of each of the townships and major boroughs, and concludes with biographies of prominent individuals arranged by township. Part 3 covers Adams County, and is structured the same as Part 2. Also included are numerous illustrations of those covered in the biography sections. This publication contains no index, but each of the chapters and biographies are bookmarked for quick searching.
This is a particularly good reference for genealogical research. Cumberland County is one of the earliest Pennsylvania counties formed and its history is therefore extensive. Adams County was formed later but its history also extends to the early formation of the country. This is also a good reference for Adams County, as it is one of two major biographical works published, whereas many other counties (including Cumberland) were the focus of numerous publications.
